| 1. | San Marino, Huntington Library, HM 01047 | | Description: - ff. 224 - Bound in 1652/53 according to a note added on f. 223v: "ἐσταχώθη παρὰ πητροϕάνουσ ἔτους ζρξά __another word, uncertain___" ("Bound by Metrophanes in the year 7161," i.e. A. D. 1652/53). Greek style binding in black stamped leather over wooden boards flush with the edges of the leaves (edges of boards without troughs); spine projects at the top and bottom. Stamps include a monogram apparently composed of the letters alpha, beta and omicron within a circle surmounted by a cross; an 8-pointed star formed of 2 overlaid squares containing a flower bud(?) within a circle, and a third stamp, free floating, undeciphered. Evidence of 2 fore edge clasps closing from back to pins on front board edge; title "θεοτοκάριον" along upper edges of leaves, to be read with the book lying on its front cover. - Written probably in the second half of the thirteenth century. Among the villages in the list (see below) is Δέσιανα, possibly to be indentified with Dečani, in modern-day Yugoslavia: in the fifteenth century the book may have been in that area. Modern tipped-in slip from a Byzantine liturgical text between ff. i-ii. Was n. 37 (this number in pencil on f. i) in a modern German catalogue. Alien sequestrated property sale by Anderson, New York, 17 February 1919 n. 46 to G. D. Smith. Date and source of acquisition by Henry E. Huntington unknown. - C. W.
