Red leather tabs. - On the inside of the front cover a few verses from classical authors in s. XVI handwriting (Iuvenalis, Sat. VI.46 inter alia). On the inside of the rear cover more Latin notes s. XVI. On f. 1v the letters "LL" (a pressmark?) and the name of a s. XVI owner: "Hermannus Udingius" (Herman Uding). In s. XVIII/XIX owned by a man called de Tenspolde, who donated the manuscript in 1814 to a J. Niefert in Pelen (?) (Latin inscriptions on f. 1r: "Bibl. J. Niefert past. (?) in Pelen (?) 1814"; in other hand: "Donum D. de Tenspolde"). MS 197 in the collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley, CA. Unusual sewing through three spine linings, the central one paper. An endband of two joined lines of chain stitching is sewn on a largely exposed leather core. The flush paste boards are held on by the cloth spine linings which extend on either side of them and are glued to them. Covered in brown goatskin with rope interlace crosses and random small tools. Bound in the same style as MS 450 and Marston MSS 72, 86, 181, 182 for the Guarnieri-Balleani library (Iesi), with the first three probably by the same binder. Written in ink on tail edge: "MACROB". Two front parchment endleaves, presumably reused from the early binding given the patterns of rust stains and wormholes, consist of undated ecclesiastical records from the diocese of Cesena. - Purchased from C. Original sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of wooden boards. Gilt edges. The secondary, beaded endband is cream and green. Covered in reddish brown goatskin, blind-tooled with a floral border and fleurons in a central panel. Name of owner is gold-tooled on side in Roman letters that have been modified to form Greek letters. Spine: triple fillets at head and tail; single fillet diapering in the panels. Gold tooling added later. Traces of two fastenings, the catches on the lower board; the upper board heavily cut in for clasps. Modern title on spine: "Guarini Lexicon Ineditum. MS. in membranis". - Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 3384). Purchased in 1956 from L. C. Witten by Thomas E. Marston. - Shailor, B. Black leather, the sides outlined in blind rules, a rectangular panel on each cover ruled in gold with a square Arab knot tool gold-stamped outside each corner of the panel, traces of holes for four thong ties on each cover, the backstrip divided into five compartments by raised bands, a gold-stamped cinquefoil in each compartment, the back and sides repaired, edges stained black. Front and back pastedowns: parchment fragments of a 12th-century Italian codex, probably a Gospel Lectionary, containing an extract from the Gospel of St. John written in Latin in a Rotunda antiquior hand. - Denis Duveen; Mellon MS 113 acquired with the Duveen collection.
