Description: - ff. i + 65 + ii - Sixteenth century. Original sewing with two strands of thread on five single supports adhered to the inside of the boards. Plain wound endbands are sewn on vegetable fiber cores which are laced into pasteboards. The square spine is lined all along with vellum. The edges are lavender. Covered in black goatskin, blind-tooled with a large diamond in concentric borders made up of flowers, foliage and heads in medallions. Two ribbon fastenings now wanting, as is some spine lining and leather. - Gift of the Yale Library Associates in 1954. - Shailor, B. Description: - ff. ii + 222 + i - Sixteenth century. Greek (according to A. R. A. Hobson); original sewing, presumably a chain stitch, on three supports laced into square-edged, flush wooden boards without edge grooves but with blind-tooled lines along the edges. The plain, wound endbands are covered with a bright yellow, beaded, secondary embroidery (traces only). Covered in dark brown calf, blind-tooled with concentric borders, different on each board, and three diamonds and flowers in the center panel. Two pins in the edge of the upper board and two sets of three holes for fastening straps on the lower. - Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 9516). Description: - ff. ii + 382 - ca. 1565, Venetian, according to A. R. A. Hobson. Original sewing on three double, tawed thongs presumably laced into pasteboards. The endbands are plain wound with a secondary embroidery. The spine is round and lined with coarse cloth extending onto the inside of the boards; the edges are slightly gauffered. Covered in dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled with concentric borders, a foliate diamond and corner pieces with six-petalled flowers and acorns in the central panel. A red label (18th-19th centuries) has been added and the head and tail of the spine repaired. - Belonged to Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (1766-1827) and to Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 5536).
