Red leather tabs. - On the inside of the front cover a few verses from classical authors in s. XVI handwriting (Iuvenalis, Sat. VI.46 inter alia). On the inside of the rear cover more Latin notes s. XVI. On f. 1v the letters "LL" (a pressmark?) and the name of a s. XVI owner: "Hermannus Udingius" (Herman Uding). In s. XVIII/XIX owned by a man called de Tenspolde, who donated the manuscript in 1814 to a J. Niefert in Pelen (?) (Latin inscriptions on f. 1r: "Bibl. J. Niefert past. (?) in Pelen (?) 1814"; in other hand: "Donum D. de Tenspolde"). MS 197 in the collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley, CA. Black leather, the sides outlined in blind rules, a rectangular panel on each cover ruled in gold with a square Arab knot tool gold-stamped outside each corner of the panel, traces of holes for four thong ties on each cover, the backstrip divided into five compartments by raised bands, a gold-stamped cinquefoil in each compartment, the back and sides repaired, edges stained black. Front and back pastedowns: parchment fragments of a 12th-century Italian codex, probably a Gospel Lectionary, containing an extract from the Gospel of St. John written in Latin in a Rotunda antiquior hand. - Denis Duveen; Mellon MS 113 acquired with the Duveen collection. After that, the MS was sold by Darmarios to the library of the Notre Dame de Pilar in Saragossa (formerly MS 51).
