Resewn with heavy thread (fine cord?), three sewn-in chains linking the quires. Two strands of sewing cord cross over to the horizontal bars of a Z lacing, the diagonals of the lacing visible through the pastedowns of the inside of the flush wooden boards, the horizontal lacing protruding under the leather of the cover. The edges of the boards are concave at head and tail. The smooth, round spine is lined with a coarse, blue-green cloth extending almost to the center of the boards on the outside. The endbands which straddle the boards are laced through them. Covered in dark red, now brown, calf faintly blind-tooled with diamonds with crosses in circles at the intersections. A strap-and-pin fastening, the pin in the edge of the upper board, two holes for the strap in the lower. Sewing slightly repaired, some leather on the spine replaced. Front cover is lined with a parchment leaf from a 15th-century Greek liturgical manuscript. - Belonged to Prof. Thomas Day Seymour of Yale ca. 1899. Bequeathed to his daughter, Elizabeth Day Seymour Angel in 1907, in whose memory it was presented to Yale in 1952 by her husband, John Angel. - Shailor, B. Two chain-stitched supports, the thread laced into flush wooden boards without a visible edge groove. The endband cores are tied with three groups of thread which straddle the boards, the endbands embroidered in a beaded herringbone pattern. There are loops of thread around the edges of the quires at head and tail. The spine is smooth and round with a lining extending over about one quarter of the board. Covered in very dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled with two concentric line borders joined at the corners. The fore-edge turn-ins are cut in a notched pattern. Two pin holes in the edge of the upper board, two leather straps with two ends each laced through the lower. Straps wanting except ends inside boards. - Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 4289). From the Cretan "Apostolis Shop", according to A. R. A. Hobson. Resewn on three single vegetable fiber cords laced at an angle in and out of flush, oak boards grooved on the square edges. There are several unused lacing holes and traces of two previous linings on the inside of the boards. Covered in calfskin, originally brick red, faintly blind-tooled with concentric borders, the central panel filled with three lozenge-shaped tools, the center one containing a fleur-de-lis. There is a pin in the edge of the upper board and three holes for braids in the lower one. Rebacked. - Bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 22408) in a Sotheby sale, May 1870. Purchased from L. C. Sewn on four vegetable fiber cords or with four chains laced into horizontal grooves on the outside of wooden boards which have deep edge grooves forking at the corners. The cords or chains are visible on the round spine which is lined with cloth which extends over about half of the outside of the boards. The headbands are Western. Covered in dark red goatskin, now brown, with corner tongues. Remains of two leather fastenings, probably braids, laced through two pairs of holes in the lower board, holes for the pins in the edge of the upper one. Triple blind-tooled fillets form an intersecting pattern more or less the same on both boards and the spine. - Purchased from Lathrop C. Harper, Inc., by Thomas E. Marston in 1957 who gave it to Yale in 1960. - Shailor, B. | | | 16. | San Marino, Huntington Library, HM 01047 | | Description: - ff. 224 - Bound in 1652/53 according to a note added on f. 223v: "ἐσταχώθη παρὰ πητροϕάνουσ ἔτους ζρξά __another word, uncertain___" ("Bound by Metrophanes in the year 7161," i.e. A. D. 1652/53). Greek style binding in black stamped leather over wooden boards flush with the edges of the leaves (edges of boards without troughs); spine projects at the top and bottom. Stamps include a monogram apparently composed of the letters alpha, beta and omicron within a circle surmounted by a cross; an 8-pointed star formed of 2 overlaid squares containing a flower bud(?) within a circle, and a third stamp, free floating, undeciphered. Evidence of 2 fore edge clasps closing from back to pins on front board edge; title "θεοτοκάριον" along upper edges of leaves, to be read with the book lying on its front cover. - Written probably in the second half of the thirteenth century. Among the villages in the list (see below) is Δέσιανα, possibly to be indentified with Dečani, in modern-day Yugoslavia: in the fifteenth century the book may have been in that area. Modern tipped-in slip from a Byzantine liturgical text between ff. i-ii. Was n. 37 (this number in pencil on f. i) in a modern German catalogue. Alien sequestrated property sale by Anderson, New York, 17 February 1919 n. 46 to G. D. Smith. Date and source of acquisition by Henry E. Huntington unknown. - C. W.
