Description: - ff. 85 - S. XV limp parchment binding with leather spine stiffener and visible sewing and flap. The parchment is from an erased music manuscript. Remnants of a paper title label on the spine (text lost). - The various components of this manuscript were brought together in the fifteenth century probably in Central Europe. On the front pastedown, in s. XV Cursiva (doubtful reading): "Nos tangit lacota krugch draeg tollit omnia nostra / Invenit pogorill. qui non wlt esse peryatell". Below, in a s. XVI German hand: "Synopsis philosophie Aristotelis". Collection of Count Oswald Seilern (1900-1967, circular armorial bookplate). Christie's sale, London, 26 March 2003 (The Count Oswald Seilern Collection), lot 12. Purchased on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund.

Description: - ff. i + 152 + ii - Sixteenth century. Original sewing on four narrow, double, tawed thongs laced into oak boards and pegged or nailed. Plain, wound endbands on vegetable fiber cores, probably laid in grooves, are covered with secondary colored endbands sewn through the spine covering. The edges are gilt, the spine round. Covered in brown goatskin, blind-tooled with a diamond pattern on the spine, each diamond enclosing two small concentric circles, a floral border on the sides enclosing vertical lines of assorted ornaments. A strap-and-pin fastening, the wood cut out for the strap ends, the pins on the lower board. Joints partially cracked, straps wanting, some worm damage. - Presented to Yale in 1940 by the Rev. The upper board is broken down the center and sewn together. Half the lower board, endbands, ties and leather around the edges of the boards wanting. - Purchased from E. Description: - ff. i + ii + 107 + i - 16th-17th centuries. Resewn on four very small vegetable fiber cords. The spine of the cover shows that the earlier supports were nearly flat and double and that there were two half-bands near head and tail. Red edges. Covered in yellow/brown calf, blind-tooled with a central panel filled with strap work inside floral borders. A rectangle of leather near the center is painted red and "Margveritte de Savoye" is tooled near the head of the lower board. The cover has been made into a case or hollow-backed binding. - Gift of Susan Dwight Bliss in 1964. - Shailor, B.
