Description: - ff. 180 - original binding: brown calf over wooden boards, sewn on three double cords; both covers blind-tooled with frames of double fillets and a St Andrew's cross, and a few lozenge-shaped tools. Remnants of one brass clasp, attached to the rear board. On the front board a damaged parchment title label with the inscription in Northern Gothica Textualis Formata beginning with a red majuscule: "Vita sanct** Barlaam *********". On the rear board four brass bosses and, in the center in black ink, the letter D (part of a shelfmark, s. XVII/XVIII?). - On the front pastedown, in s. XV Gothica Hybrida Libraria: "Liber monasterii beate Marie virginis in Hyrczenhayn ordinis Canonicorum Regularium prope Ortenberg Moguntinensis dyocesis" (this inscription is repeated on the rear pastedown). The manuscript belonged to the convent of Hirzenhain, Regular Canons of St Augustine (Land Hessen). On the front pastedown there is also an erased ownership inscription in German, a German inscription s. XVII beginning "Johannes Dopent ...", and the oval armorial bookplate of Friedrich Freiherr von und zu Franckenstein in Ullstadt. Purchased from Les Enluminures (Chicago, Paris).

Traces of five bosses on each cover; remnants of two brass clasps attached to the rear board. On the second compartment of the spine a parchment label has been pasted in the form of a hide, with the s. XIX inscription in ink : "Compendium / theologicae / veritatis./ (Pergament / Manscrpt)."

Description: - ff. 246 - original binding: red leather over slightly bevelled wooden boards, sewn on five leather thongs, rebacked in white leather, the corners repaired with brown leather. Marks of two leather straps attached to the rear cover; holes of the iron pins on the front cover. Iron chain of nine elongated links and large round eyelet (length: 82 cm.), fixed to the top of the rear board by means of an iron staple. - A few marginal notes in German point to Southern Germany or Austria as the area where the manuscript originated.. On the front pastedown large armorial bookplate surmounted by a protonotarial hat, with the inscription "Io(hannes) Ern(estus) de Famagne, protonotarius apostolicus, sacrae theologiae doctor, cons(ul?) Pass(aviensis?), decanus et parochus urbis Waidhov(ensis) ad Theiam" (Waidhoven on the Thaya is a place in the north of Lower Austria, close to the Czechian border). Pasted on the front pastedown also a paper label with a short Latin description of the manuscript in s. XIX handwriting. Christie's sale, 20 Nov. 2002, lot 22.

XIX/XX binding: blue morocco over pasteboard, the covers decorated with fillets in blind-tooling; spine with five raised bands and gold-tooled inscription "CICERO / DE / OFFICIIS". - The manuscript belonged in the sixteenth century to a Quintilio Useppe or Useppio according to the inscription in Humanistica Cursiva on f. 67v: "Sylvia mi patria est, soboles Useppia fertur, / Nomine Quintilius doctor et ipse vocor". Collection of Ambroise Firmin-Didot (1790-1876; his small oval red leather gold-tooled ex-libris pasted on the front pastedown; his sale, Paris, June 1882, lot 36.
